Charlie's Produce Brand Cut Cantaloupe Products
Charlie's Produce of Spokane, WA recalled Charlie's Produce Brand Cut Cantaloupe Products, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. The products containing cantaloupe were distributed in Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana to retail stores, delis, and foodservice institutions. Products are branded with the Charlie's Produce name and logo, in a hard plastic clamshell, with a Use By date of 3 07 through 3 29 stamped on the bottom of the containe r. This recall was initiated when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an import alert regarding cantaloupe from this grower because fruit from this company appeared to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada.
