Fresca Italia of Brisbane, CA recalled Burrata because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal, or diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. This product was distributed in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California in retail stores and restaurants. This product weighs approximately 8.8oz and is packaged in a white and green plastic wrapper with the manufacturer's name, "Caseificio Voglie di Latte" and the product name "Burrata."20The only batch subject to the recall was labeled with the expiration date of 24/5/2008. The recall is the result of survey sampling by the California Deptartment of Food & Agriculture which revealed that the product in question contained the bacteria.
